GEOGRAPHY OPTIONAL SYLLABUS

Geography optional syllabus offers a comprehensive study of the Earth’s physical features, human geography, and the relationship between the environment and human activities. It includes physical geography topics like geomorphology, climatology, oceanography, and biogeography, along with human geography themes such as population, settlement, economic activities, and regional planning. The syllabus also covers Indian geography in detail, including resources, agriculture, industries, transport, and contemporary geographical issues.

This optional subject is widely chosen by aspirants due to its scientific approach, diagram-based answers, and significant overlap with the General Studies papers. Comprising two papers of 250 marks each, the Geography optional totals 500 marks and can be a high-scoring subject with the right preparation strategy and use of standard UPSC Geography books and atlases. A good grasp of concepts combined with regular map practice can greatly enhance performance in the exam.
